Nice and Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi arrested for alleged match-fixing in Ligue 1
Nice and Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi arrested for alleged match-fixing in Ligue 1 Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi (23) is reported to have been arrested by the police two weeks before the World Cup kicked off, according to The Athletic . On loan at OGC Nice last winter, the striker is being investigated for match-fixing, accused of deliberately picking up a yellow card during the match between Les Aiglons and FC Metz on 17th May. Being booked meant he was suspended for the first leg of the Ligue 1/Ligue 2 play-off, which Wahi consequently missed. “We can confirm that a 23-year-old football player, competing in France’s Ligue 1, was arrested on May 29 as part of an investigation opened by the Marseille public prosecutor’s office into allegations of organized fraud, organized sports corruption, handling of proceeds of crime and money laundering,” a spokesperson for the Marseille public prosecutor’s office confirmed to The Athletic “He was released after he was interviewed in police custody. The investigations remain ongoing. The football player is not a member of the French selection taking part in the World Cup.” Several bets on Wahi receiving a yellow card were reported to the French Football Federation (FFF), leading to the Ivorian being questioned by the relevant authorities within the anti-corruption unit. However, this did not result in any charges being brought, as the investigation is still ongoing; Wahi was subsequently authorised to travel to the United States to take part in the World Cup.
