NSL Week 8 Recap: Ottawa Rapid takes the throne as more drama unfolds
NSL Week 8 Recap: Ottawa Rapid takes the throne as more drama unfolds The Northern Super League (NSL) returned from a week-long break with another string of unpredictable results , with Ottawa Rapid FC taking the lead in the table. For weeks, the Montréal Roses looked untouchable. They sat at the top of the standings and seemed destined to extend their lead. Instead, the door for Ottawa opened and they were forced to settle for a late draw in Toronto. Of course, DB Pridham wasn’t going to let that opportunity go to waste. A commanding 3-1 victory over Vancouver Rise FC had ended their impressive winning streak. Unfortunately, it also sent the Rapid to the top of the table for the first time this season. Here’s the stinger: Ottawa is a genuine title contender. Elsewhere, Halifax Tides FC secured three points and a second clean sheet this season. They maintained their upward trajectory with a controlled victory over Calgary Wild FC. Three matches, eight goals, a dramatic equalizer, and a new league leader. Week 8 had everything. Halifax Tides FC 2-0 Calgary Wild FC Saturday, June 13 | Wanderers Grounds, Halifax Calgary were set to be the ones to watch. Meanwhile, Halifax’s purposeful start paid off with an early breakthrough. A cleverly worked short corner found Julia Benati, who whipped her effort into the back of the net to put the Tides ahead. Calgary responded well and created chances through Kahli Johnson and Jorian Baucom, but Rylee Foster-Inman was equal to everything the visitors threw at her. Unfortunately for them, Halifax struck again just before halftime. Saorla Miller cut onto her right foot and calmly tucked home the Tides’ second, sending the home side into the break with a comfortable two-goal cushion. The Wild pushed hard after halftime and looked the more dangerous side for stretches. Goalkeeper Katelin Talbert made several key stops to keep the deficit at two, but Calgary could not find a breakthrough. In the end, the Tides managed to close out a convincing 2-0 victory. AFC Toronto 1-1 Montréal Roses FC Saturday, June 13 | York Lions Stadium, Toronto This one felt destined to end in heartbreak for somebody. The first half was a tense and evenly matched game. AFC Toronto came closest to breaking the deadlock, first through a Kaylee Hunter free kick that crashed off the post and then a Nikayla Small effort that rattled the crossbar. Montréal had opportunities of their own, particularly from set pieces, but Sofia Manner kept the Roses at bay. The breakthrough finally arrived just after the hour mark, though not before more drama. A Montréal defender conceded a penalty after a handball inside the area. Hunter stepped up but sent her effort wide, keeping the game scoreless. The missed opportunity did not deter the hosts. A flowing move involving debutant Jordan Brewster and Hunter ended with Lauren Rowe curling a stunning finish into the top corner to give Toronto a deserved lead. With time ticking away, it looked as though AFC Toronto had done enough. Then came Lisa Pechersky. Deep into stoppage time, the wing-back drove into the box and bent a brilliant effort beyond Manner to rescue a point for Montréal and silence York Lions Stadium. Toronto squandered their two points, while Montréal salvaged one to extend their unbeaten run, though the following result knocked the club off the top of the table. Vancouver Rise FC 1-3 Ottawa Rapid FC Sunday, June 14 | Swangard Stadium, Burnaby The biggest match of the weekend arguably delivered the biggest statement. Vancouver entered the contest riding a wave of momentum and looking every bit like the title contenders they were last year. Ottawa soon foiled their plans. After an entertaining opening half with multiple efforts from De Filippo drifting wide, Min-a Lee broke the deadlock with a spectacular strike from outside the area that flew into the corner. Vancouver responded exactly as league leaders do. Jessica De Filippo kept battling and eventually found the equalizer just before halftime, ensuring the sides went into the break level. The second half belonged entirely to Ottawa, however. Less than five minutes after the restart, DB Pridham restored the visitors’ lead with a powerful finish. The decisive moment came shortly afterward when Vancouver’s Kennedy Faulknor brought down an Ottawa attacker in the box, conceding a penalty and earning a red card. Pridham then stepped up and calmly converted for her second goal of the afternoon. Another standout campaign has reinforced Pridham’s status as one of the NSL’s most compelling talents, though players outside Europe’s traditional power centres often remain on the periphery of awards conversations like the Ballon d’Or. Down to 10 players and trailing by two, Vancouver never truly recovered. Ottawa defended resolutely, saw out the match, and celebrated a victory that felt bigger than three points. By the end of the weekend, the standings had a new look. Ottawa Rapid FC stands alone at the summit of the Northern Super League, having dethroned Montréal and injected fresh intrigue into the title race.
