Liverpool’s title hopes hinge on one pivotal signing
Liverpool’s title hopes hinge on one pivotal signing Liverpool massively underperformed this season. The Anfield outfit left a lot to be desired almost every time they entered the pitch with Arne Slot 's tactics failing to get the most out of his players. Attackers such as Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah were forced to become creators rather than goal scorers which completely went against the way that Jurgen Klopp had them playing at their best. This lack of form resulted in the rumour mill going into overdrive with the Reds looking likely to have another huge rebuild on their hands. Many areas among their squad need upgrading but, there's one position in particular which needs a huge boost and without it, their title hopes could be over before the season even starts. Liverpool must sign at least one centre-back this summer Liverpool may have already added Jeremy Jacquet to their ranks ahead of the 2026-27 season but, that doesn't mean their centre-back issues are solved. If Ibrahima Konate chose to extend his contract and stay at Anfield, there would be an argument about the Reds already having enough depth among their ranks, especially with Giovanni Leoni returning from injury. But, since the Frenchman has exited and Joe Gomez's future is still unknown, there's literally not a more important signing for Liverpool to make than a new centre-back. Virgil van Dijk is obviously a guaranteed starter but, since neither Leoni nor Jacquet have played in the Premier League before, it's unclear whether they'll fit straight into Andoni Iraola's plans or not. Several centre-backs have already been linked with an Anfield switch, but, with the World Cup currently taking place and the fact that the Reds don't have their shortlist fully completed yet, no concrete moves have been made. A solid centre-back at a decent price is hard to come by at the moment with most people thinking that Liverpool would've tried to make a last-ditch attempt to sign Marcos Senesi after his exit from Bournemouth. But, since Tottenham survived relegation and an agreement was already reached with the Argentinian, others such as Luka Vuskovic and Nico Schlotterbeck are now being linked with L4 instead. Fenway Sports Group have already got rid of Slot but, replacing your manager doesn't always fix things. Several players from the Reds' first-team squad will also need to step up their game, especially if they want to get into the latter stages of the Champions League and challenge for the Premier League title. Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz will have lots of eyes on them after their below-par campaigns and, if they don't deliver, it'll be catastrophic. Of course, nobody knows how things are going to go under Iraola but, if it's anything like his time with Bournemouth, Liverpool will be in safe hands. Hundreds of millions will probably need to be spent by the Anfield outfit again because, without another massive investment into their team, it's unclear how things will improve. Andy Robertson have all left.
