Speakman set for new sporting director role

[Getty Images] Former Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman is in advanced talks with FC Copenhagen over a similar position at the Danish club. Speakman played a key role in Sunderland's eventual promotion back into the Premier League from the Championship during the 2024/25 season, having joined the Stadium of Light club in 2020 when the club was in League One. But Speakman left Sunderland in February and is the leading contender to become FC Copenhagen's new sporting director. Talks are well underway and are said to be advancing. Earlier this year the Danish side parted ways with former sporting director Sune Smith-Nielsen and publicly outlined their intention to appoint a replacement. Speakman was an integral figure for the Black Cats ahead of his departure earlier this year. In confirming his exit, Sunderland chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said: "Kristjaan has made an important contribution to Sunderland AFC during a period of significant transition and growth, helping to rebuild the club and restore its place in the Premier League."
