Derry City slump to away defeat against Galway

Derry have won just two of their last 10 games [Getty Images] Derry City fell to a 2-1 defeat away to Galway United in the Premier Division to mount pressure back on boss Tiernan Lynch. Stephen Walsh scored in either half to help Galway to victory, with Michael Duffy scoring what proved to be a late consolation goal for Derry from the spot. The latest defeat means that the Candystripes have won just two of their last 10 league games as they remain sixth in the table. Galway are now just a point behind Lynch's side and have two games in hand. Walsh double helps Galway to victory Galway were playing their first match at the home of Galway GAA, Pearse Stadium, as their home at Eamonn Deacy Park undergoes essential maintenance and they made themselves at home early on. After just four minutes, a long throw-in from the right was hooked towards goal by Lee Devitt but his effort came off the crossbar and Walsh headed the rebound wide. Walsh came close again moments later but Eddie Beach denied him from a narrow angle. The visitors, who were creating precious little in the first half, fell behind on 24 minutes. Ed McCarthy put a ball into the box that was met by the head of Walsh and Beach was only able to get a hand to it to help the ball into the bottom corner. Lynch reacted to their poor first half by bringing on striker Liam Boyce at the break, but the hosts blew his team talk out of the water just three minutes after the restart. David Hurley clipped a lovely ball over the top of the Derry defence and Walsh latched on to it and lashed home a shot into the bottom corner. Lynch would have been hoping for a response out of his side but it did not materialise. It took until the 75 minute-mark for a chance and Brandon Fleming wasted it as he curled an effort over the bar from the edge of the box. At the other end, Gianfranco Facchineri beat Beach to Jimmy Keohane's free-kick delivery, but couldn't keep his glancing header down. A Derry goal as the clock ticked down would have made for a grandstand finish and Evan Watts had to react quickly to stop Kevin Santos' stabbed first-time effort on 82 minutes. They were handed a reprieve with just over a minute of normal time left when Walsh was adjudged to have handled Boyce's shot and Daryl Carolan pointed to the spot. Michael Duffy dispatched the penalty but the Candystripes were unable to find an equaliser as they lost for the second time this season against Galway.
