Former Atletico Madrid forward explains why Alvarez would be a ‘spectacular’ signing for Barcelona The Julian Alvarez transfer story continues to gather momentum, and after his public admission that he believes a transfer is the best solution for his future, the debate surrounding his next destination has intensified. Barcelona remain strongly linked with the Atletico Madrid forward, while several figures connected to both clubs have started sharing their views on the situation. Among them is former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero, who believes the Argentine international would be a perfect fit for Hansi Flick’s side. Aguero explains why Alvarez suits Barcelona Speaking on the Jijantes channel , Aguero did not hide his admiration for his compatriot and explained why he believes Barcelona would be an ideal destination. “Julian would fit in at many clubs, but he’d be a spectacular fit at Barça because of his style of play. “He’s a fantastic player—someone who can play anywhere on the field and is a complete offensive threat,” he began. Aguero believes one of the striker’s greatest strengths is his ability to operate in multiple attacking roles, giving coaches far more tactical flexibility than a traditional number nine. “It’s good to have players like that. He’s an offensive player—a winger, a forward, an attacking midfielder. “You have a wild card; you can use him when others get injured.” Backing Alvarez’s decision Aguero feels Alvarez will fit in at Barcelona. Rather than criticising the player, Aguero argued that honesty was the only realistic option available. “The club isn’t going to say anything, so the player has no choice but to be sincere—he’s trying to be honest. “He says he met with the club and they decided that a transfer is the best option,” he noted. Aguero also defended the striker against criticism regarding the timing of his comments, insisting that “there’s nothing wrong” with speaking openly about the matter. However, the former Barcelona forward also acknowledged the reality of the negotiations. Despite the player’s wishes, Atletico Madrid remain in a powerful position because of the contract situation and the enormous release clause attached to the striker. “With that clause, the decision lies with the club. The club will decide whether or not to sell you, and he, to be honest, ended up saying as much, and that’s for the best,” he explained. More to the story Aguero has backed Alvarez’s decision. The former striker argued that keeping an unhappy player rarely benefits anyone involved and suggested clubs should seek solutions when situations reach that stage. “It’s very difficult. When a player isn’t happy, each club takes the stance it wants to take and the player ends up losing out.” He then expanded further, “If I were the club and a player wasn’t happy with the city or whatever the reason, if he’s not getting on with his teammates, the manager or a director. “If he’s not comfortable, the best thing is to find a solution and sell him. You’re not going to have a player looking glum and in a bad mood all year round. “If he’s not comfortable, the club has to help him; to me, that’s how it works,” he explained. Aguero also dismissed concerns about Barcelona’s ability to structure a deal financially. “Obviously, they can’t pay 120, 200 or 300 million, but they reach agreements to pay a little each year. Barça can pay it off over five or six years, and that way they’ll eventually pay it off in full.”
