Journalist: Personal terms no issue as Man United face 4-way battle to sign 21-year-old midfield ace Manchester United Transfer Plans: Fernandes Pursuit Tests Old Trafford Resolve Fernandes Chase Enters Defining Phase Manchester United’s summer is beginning to take shape around one familiar question, how far are they prepared to go for the right player? According to The Athletic , United remain in pursuit of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, a 21-year-old who has become one of their priority targets. Tottenham Hotspur have now emerged as potential rivals, while Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have also shown interest. That interest matters. Personal terms are “not expected to be an issue”, which tells us United still possess the power of Old Trafford. Even after finishing 15th in the Premier League in 2024-25 and missing out on Europe, they convinced Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko to join. Last summer, they also beat Real Madrid to Leny Yoro. Pulling power, though, does not always solve price. West Ham Valuation Creates Tension West Ham’s expected £80m demand for Fernandes appears to be the central problem. United admire the player, one formal bid is expected, but the club have shown reluctance to meet that valuation. That is where competition becomes awkward. Interest from Tottenham, PSG or Real Madrid does not automatically mean Fernandes will choose elsewhere. It can, however, harden West Ham’s position and force United into an uncomfortable choice. Do they pay for conviction, or walk away from a player they clearly want? Photo IMAGO There is also a wider pattern forming. United’s midfield search includes Alex Scott, Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton. Bournemouth want to renew Scott’s deal, potentially with a release clause of around £75m. Anderson is admired, but Nottingham Forest’s demands are viewed as too high. In other words, United are shopping in an expensive aisle. Midfield Rebuild Holds Key Ederson’s expected €45m move from Atalanta, pending a medical after his World Cup involvement, would add another important piece. He made his first World Cup appearance for Brazil in their 3-0 win over Haiti, coming on in the 81st minute. That signing should bring athleticism, control and bite. Yet Fernandes would offer something different, a young midfielder with technical promise and long-term value. United also continue to assess other areas. Crysencio Summerville is among left-wing options, while Lewis Hall is admired at left-back. In goal, Karl Darlow and Sam Johnstone have been considered as potential cover for Senne Lammens. Rashford Exit Remains Unresolved Marcus Rashford remains available after Barcelona’s €30m option expired. United are not willing to discuss another loan with Barcelona and will only listen to permanent offers. Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek could also leave permanently, while United are open to offers for Manuel Ugarte. A Joshua Zirkzee departure may trigger a move for another centre-forward. This is not a quiet rebuild. It is a squad being pulled apart and rebuilt in real time. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Manchester United supporter’s perspective, the Fernandes story is exciting, but also slightly exhausting. United seem to have identified the profile they want, young, technically gifted, physically ready and with resale value. That is sensible recruitment. The concern is whether the club can actually execute it without being dragged into another inflated auction. £80m for Mateus Fernandes feels steep, even in this market. He may become an elite Premier League midfielder, but United have been burned too often by paying tomorrow’s superstar price for today’s developing player. That said, there is something encouraging about the ambition. Fernandes, Ederson and Sesko would represent a younger, more dynamic spine. Add Mbeumo and Yoro into the picture and the club’s recruitment suddenly looks more coherent than it has for years. The Rashford situation still hangs over everything. Emotionally, it is difficult. Financially, it may be necessary. United need clarity, not another summer of half-decisions. If Fernandes genuinely wants Old Trafford, United should push hard, but not blindly. The smartest clubs know when to pay, and when to pivot. This summer may reveal whether United have finally learned that lesson. Word count: 654
