Three things we learned from England’s 0-0 draw with Ghana at the 2026 World Cup
Three things we learned from England’s 0-0 draw with Ghana at the 2026 World Cup England were held to a goalless draw by Ghana in their second group game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Three Lions have now drawn their second group fixture at each of their last four major tournaments. Read on as we look at three things we learned from the game. Lack of creativity in midfield England dominated possession, but did not have creativity in midfield to unlock Ghana’s low block. While Jude Bellingham, Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice registered seven key passes between them, none of them managed to produce a truly penetrative pass. Manager Thomas Tuchel’s decision to omit Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton from the squad proved costly here. His line-breaking passing could have helped to break down the Black Stars’ defence. Wingers offered little threat Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke struggled to get past their markers, preventing them from creating any threat. The pair registered two key passes apiece. Bukayo Saka, who replaced Gordon, looked more dangerous when he came on. The Arsenal star forced goalkeeper Benjamin Asare to make his only meaningful save of the game. Tuchel may need to consider starting Saka and Marcus Rashford in Saturday’s clash against Panama. Marc Guehi justifies inclusion The Manchester City defender replaced John Stones in the starting line-up and justified his inclusion. While Ghana offered little attacking threat, Guehi impressed in possession. He completed 81 passes in the opposition half — the most of any player — and played three long balls. He was also solid defensively. He lost just one of his aerial and ground duels, respectively, while making four clearances and two recoveries. Stats from sofascore.com
