'Decisive' Liverpool star could 'pack his bags' and exit Anfield
'Decisive' Liverpool star could 'pack his bags' and exit Anfield Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola are going to have to be brutal with Liverpool this summer. Their performances during the 2025-26 season were far from ideal with the club finishing in fifth place just a year after winning the Premier League title. Of course, one moment or decision can't be solely to blame but, the fact that most of Liverpool's squad ended up on the treatment table will have certainly had a lot to do with it. Certain players could also be singled out for their poor performances with one of Iraola's men now being told he can exit Anfield this summer. Cody Gakpo could 'pack his bags' and get moved on by Liverpool Cody Gakpo had one of his worst-ever seasons in a Liverpool shirt last time out. Even though Arne Slot stuck by him no matter what, the attacker could hardly string two passes together never mind get one of his shots into the back of net. His lack of form probably had a lot to do with the way his fellow countryman was using him in his starting XI as he failed to play to his strengths. The same happened with Mohamed Salah who's now chosen to exit Anfield due to the number of times he fell out with Slot. However, the difference with Gakpo is that he's only just signed a long-term deal so, if another club wanted him, they'd have to cough up a rather large chunk of money. Of course, this hasn't stopped Tottenham from making their interest known with a fresh report from TuttoSport claiming that the left-winger could actually leave Liverpool this summer. "De Zerbi would like to sign striker Cody Gakpo , who risks losing his focus in Liverpool's new project led by Iraola," they wrote. "In De Zerbi's 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, the Dutchman would be perfect as an attacking winger on the left flank. "The same position he plays for Ronald Koeman's national team: allowing him to target hapless defenders with his deadly runs, but also to cut back to shoot with his preferred foot (the right). "Gakpo has a contract until 2031. Now negotiations need to begin with the Reds, who are obviously in no rush. "The reason is simple: the World Cup showcase is highlighting the 1999-born player's qualities, allowing sporting director Hughes to keep his price high despite the already completed acquisition of Munoz in that role and the ongoing bid for Diomande. "Translation: Gakpo could pack his bags and leave Anfield this summer, but certainly not for a bargain price." Liverpool can't sell Cody Gakpo without having a replacement lined up Thanks to his poor performances this season, most fans would be happy to see Gakpo leave Liverpool this summer . The attacker is 27 years old and, even though he's still got a few years left of his prime, some fans believe that his time with the Anfield outfit is up. However, at the start of the season, Liverpool sold Luis Diaz without having a replacement lined up and, even though many thought that Gakpo would thrive, he failed to live up to expectations. The lack of support that the Dutchman gave his fellow attackers definitely didn't help the Reds' performances with his nine goals barely making a dent on the progress that the club were trying to make. So, unless Iraola and Hughes know who they're going to bring in after they move Gakpo on, there's surely no way that they'd even think about selling him. But, since the 2026 World Cup is making him look good with Daniel Sturridge even saying he looked " decisive ", now could be the best time for Liverpool to cash in, especially if they want to generate some funds for more new signings this summer.
