Boro meet Wrexham in one of five all-Championship cup ties

Beaten play-off finalists Middlesbrough will face Wrexham, and relegated West Ham United meet Portsmouth in two of five all-Championship ties in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Having missed out on a place in the top flight to a 90th-minute winner against Hull in May, Boro take on the ambitious Dragons at home for only the second time in the EFL Cup, while the Hammers - back in the Championship after 14 years - entertain Pompey at London Stadium. In the other all second-tier ties, Queens Park Rangers play Millwall at Loftus Road, Birmingham City travel to last season's quarter-finalists Cardiff City, and Derby County host last term's League One champions Lincoln City. The two other sides relegated from the Premier League last season face potentially tricky ties. Wolves will hope to avoid an upset against League Two Port Vale at Molineux, while Burnley are up against League Two play-off final winners Notts County, having been separated by two divisions last season. Elsewhere, either Tranmere or National League play-off winners Rochdale will go to Bradford, while the two other sides involved in this year's preliminary round - tier-five champions York City and Crawley - have the incentive of a trip to Championship Watford in the second round. As in 2025-26, this year's competition will feature a preliminary round to accommodate the nine Premier League sides in European competitions. This will ensure 32 teams are in the pot at the third-round stage when those top-flight teams enter.
