Spurs fail with same bid twice – player prefers Arsenal
Spurs fail with same bid twice – player prefers Arsenal Tottenham Hotspur submitted the same bid to sign Sandro Tonali twice, despite Newcastle United’s initial rejection, and the player still prefers to join Arsenal. Photo by George Wood/Getty Images Tottenham Hotspur are keen on the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, and they recently submitted an offer of £75m for the midfielder. Newcastle rejected the bid, hoping for a package of £100m instead. Craig Hope reports for the Daily Mail that Spurs decided to go back in again, but rather than improving their offer, they simply asked Newcastle to reconsider the initial £75m bid. Unsurprisingly, Newcastle swiftly rejected the second attempt too. With Tonali still having four years on his contract, any deal to sign him will be an expensive one. Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images To make matters worse from a Spurs perspective, Luke Edwards of The Telegraph reports that he doesn’t believe Tonali really wants to join Tottenham anyway. The journalist claims he’s been informed the player would prefer Arsenal or Manchester City. Edwards isn’t the first to make that claim, though it may not matter. Even before Spurs tested the water and unearthed just how much money Newcastle want, there were already reports from James McNicholas of The Athletic that the signing may prove prohibitively expensive to Arsenal. Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images If Arsenal wanted to sign Tonali at any cost, there’s really no reason why he should end up at Spurs. The Gunners have Champions League football, they’re the Premier League champions, and the alternative is a move to the back-to-back 17th-place finishers. But if Arsenal think Spurs are bidding too much, and that bid still isn’t enough to convince Newcastle to sell, then it’s hard to see the player ending up at the Emirates Stadium next season.
