English pundit tears into Barcelona new signing Anthony Gordon: ‘Will not be staying in Catalonia for too long’ Earlier in the summer, there was much excitement at Barcelona after the club announced the big-money signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. The Englishman is set to join the Catalans for a fee of around €70 million, which is quite a significant investment given the club’s economic situation. However, that excitement is slowly turning into worry for Barcelona fans as Gordon hasn’t exactly performed well for England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far. Souness criticises Barcelona new signing Gordon In light of his poor performances in the World Cup, popular English football pundit Graeme Souness has criticised Barcelona for making such a big investment in the Newcastle star. “Barcelona will have watched their new £70m winger Anthony Gordon in England’s opening group games and wondered what they have bought,” Souness said. He went on to warn that Gordon’s conservative style of play would not survive long in Catalonia if it continued. “If Gordon turns up in Barcelona and plays as conservatively as he did against Croatia and Ghana, then he will not be staying in Catalonia for too long,” he added. Souness then drew a direct comparison with Lamine Yamal, calling the Spaniard the benchmark for wingers at Barcelona. “Lamine Yamal is the template for a Barcelona winger. If Yamal is doing that, what is Gordon doing?” he questioned. “He’s certainly not Bukayo Saka’s standard,” he concluded. Still time for Gordon All eyes on Gordon ahead of England vs Panama game. (Photo by Richard Pelham/Getty Images) While Gordon has indeed struggled in the World Cup so far, it must be noted that the Englishman still has a lot of time to bounce back. Gordon is still a key piece in the English frontline, and given that the Three Lions have a relatively easier outing against Panama in their last group game, it could be an excellent opportunity for the Barcelona-bound striker to regain his form. Even beyond the Panama game, Gordon is expected to play a key role for England during the knockout stage, thus giving the Englishman ample time to silence his critics.
