Sabrina D’Angelo returns home with AFC Toronto transfer following WSL chapter AFC Toronto has added one of Canada’s most decorated goalkeepers to their roster, signing Canadian international Sabrina D’Angelo for the remainder of the 2026 Northern Super League season. The 33-year-old from Welland, Ontario returns home after spending more than a decade competing in some of the world’s top women’s leagues. She brings championship experience, international pedigree and leadership to AFC Toronto as the club continues its NSL campaign. D’Angelo joins AFC Toronto following her stint with Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League. Before arriving at Villa, she had spent two seasons with Arsenal helping the Gunners win consecutive FA Women’s League Cups. Earlier in her career, she enjoyed four successful seasons in Sweden with Vittsjö GIK after establishing herself in the NWSL, won two NWSL Shields, an NWSL Championship with the North Carolina Courage and earned Championship MVP honours in 2016 after making three penalty shootout saves to secure the title for the Western New York Flash. “Sabrina is a player whose experience and accomplishments speak for themselves,” said technical director Billy Wilson. “She has competed at the highest levels of the game, both domestically and internationally, and understands what it takes to win. “Beyond her ability on the pitch, we are bringing in a proven leader who is passionate about growing the game in Canada and genuinely excited about what we are building here in Toronto. We believe Sabrina will have a tremendous impact on our team, our culture and our ambitions moving forward.” Head coach Marko Milanović believes that D’Angelo’s arrival will immediately strengthen the squad both on and off the field. “Sabrina brings experience and quality to an already organized group,” Milanović said. “Her communication, leadership and composure will have a positive influence on our defensive structure, while her ability on the ball gives us additional options when building from the back. She has performed at a high level throughout her career, and we are excited to see the impact she can make within our environment.” Returning to home soil Embed from Getty Images For D’Angelo, the move is about more than joining another club. It’s a chance to help build Canada’s first professional women’s league in her home province. “Coming home means a lot to me,” D’Angelo said. “While I’ve had the privilege of playing in some incredible leagues and with some amazing clubs, there’s a different level of pride that comes with competing in your country’s professional league. “AFC Toronto has a clear vision and is building something special. I’m incredibly honoured and grateful to be a part of what the club is creating.” Since 2016, D’Angelo has represented Canada at two Olympic Games, two World Cups and numerous international competitions. She has established herself as one of Canada’s most reliable goalkeepers over the past decade. D’Angelo officially joins AFC Toronto on July 1 after signing a pre-contract. She will become eligible for selection once the Northern Super League transfer window opens on July 20.
