“One to keep an eye on” – Liverpool could move for Chelsea star this summer
“One to keep an eye on” – Liverpool could move for Chelsea star this summer Liverpool Interest in Josh Acheampong Could Offer Defensive Transfer Clue Liverpool’s summer transfer work has largely centred on attacking reinforcements and midfield uncertainty, but the defensive picture remains just as important. On the latest edition of Anfield Index’s Media Matters, Dave Davis and David Lynch discussed whether Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong could be a name to watch as Liverpool assess their options. The discussion came as Davis noted Chelsea’s crowded defensive department, joking that they now have “approximately 6,423 centre backs or people that can do the hybrid role.” That led the conversation towards whether Liverpool may look at Chelsea’s situation and see an opportunity. Josh Acheampong named as one to watch David Lynch was careful not to present Acheampong as a guaranteed target, but he did confirm Liverpool had previous interest. “Josh Acheampong was someone prior to him signing his new contract that Liverpool were kind of in contact with.” Lynch added that Liverpool had perhaps been “making a small play” for the player before his Chelsea deal was resolved. The suggestion at the time, according to Lynch, was simple. “If you move on, we could find a role for you.” That line is important because it explains why Acheampong’s name still carries relevance. Liverpool’s interest was not invented out of thin air, and it appears to have been linked to a specific squad profile they may still need. Defensive profile ticks Liverpool boxes The attraction is not difficult to understand. Lynch described Acheampong as “a kind of centre half, right sided defender.” That matters because Liverpool’s defensive search appears to involve more than simply signing another centre back. They may also need a player capable of helping at right back, depending on how Andoni Iraola and the recruitment department shape the squad. Lynch explained that Acheampong “seems like an option that would make sense and tick some boxes as a kind of centre half righted defender.” Photo: IMAGO Dave Davis also highlighted the importance of the player’s domestic status, saying, “the fact he’s also homegrown as well.” Lynch agreed, adding, “So ticks a lot of boxes.” For Liverpool, that combination could be valuable. A young defender, homegrown, capable of playing centrally and on the right side, would fit a squad need without necessarily forcing the club into a huge senior signing. No guarantees, but Liverpool may monitor closely This was not presented as an active negotiation or an imminent bid. Lynch made that clear when discussing whether Liverpool had maintained their interest after Acheampong’s new contract. “Whether they’ve seen enough in the intervening period to maintain that interest, I’m not sure.” That caution matters. Liverpool have more urgent priorities elsewhere, particularly in attack, and Lynch later explained that the defensive search may sit lower down the club’s summer list. Still, Acheampong was clearly identified as a player worth watching. “Of all the kind of names that are there, I think he’s maybe the one to keep an eye on.” He added there were “no guarantees,” before leaving the door slightly open. “He’s going to have to move somewhere. So maybe Liverpool.” That is the right way to read this situation. Liverpool are not being framed as certain movers for Josh Acheampong, but his profile makes sense. If Chelsea’s squad remains crowded, and if Liverpool decide they need a hybrid defender who can cover centre back and right back, then Acheampong could become a very interesting name later in the window. For now, it is a watching brief. Yet in a market where Liverpool may need flexibility, youth, and homegrown quality, Josh Acheampong fits enough of the criteria to stay firmly on the radar.
