Inter ‘snubbed’ by Palestra for Chelsea, reveal Tonali regret Inter director Piero Ausilio admits they got ‘snubbed’ when Marco Palestra went to Chelsea and hints Oaktree were to blame, but admits he was ‘caught napping’ on Sandro Tonali. We did what we had to do, our maximum was less than half of what the others could provide. It’s a snub and we have to take that.” It has been reported that the reason Inter took so long to get the Palestra deal over the line was hesitation from owners Oaktree, who are based in the United States of America. When asked how it feels to deal with patrons so far away, Ausilio hinted there was some truth to the rumours. (Photo by Marco Rosi – SS Lazio/Getty Images) “It is a bit unusual, and it is important to have a go-between like Marotta working with both the sporting and managerial sides of things. At times we manage to transmit our ideas well, at times less well.” There was an unexpected confession when Ausilio was asked about his biggest transfer regret, because it was not the Palestra failure, but one going further back. “A situation where I could’ve done more was Tonali when he was still at Brescia. In that situation, I was caught napping.” Instead, Tonali moved to Inter’s rivals Milan in the summer of 2020, then three years later was sold on to Newcastle United for over €60m.
