Chelsea complete Marco Palestra signing as Xabi Alonso lands first addition of new era

Chelsea complete Marco Palestra signing as Xabi Alonso lands first addition of new era Chelsea have completed the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta, with the Italy international putting pen to paper on a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old becomes the first signing since Xabi Alonso was appointed head coach, marking another significant step in Chelsea’s squad rebuild ahead of the 2026-27 season. Palestra arrives after Chelsea accelerated negotiations in recent weeks despite interest from Serie A champions Inter Milan. Speaking after the transfer was confirmed, Palestra said the opportunity to join Chelsea was impossible to ignore. “One of the best clubs in the world wanted me,” he said . “I’m excited to get started and can’t wait to meet the fans, my teammates and the manager.” The Italian also revealed Alonso has already outlined his tactical ideas. “He explained how he wants us to play,” Palestra said. “It’s exciting and we’re looking forward to competing in the Premier League.” Chelsea believe Palestra’s versatility will make him an important addition to Alonso’s squad. Although naturally a right-sided player, he is capable of operating on either flank and can also play as a conventional full-back or wing-back. Those qualities became increasingly important following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid earlier this summer, leaving Chelsea short of experienced options on the left side of defence. Palestra enjoyed an outstanding loan spell at Cagliari during the 2025-26 campaign. He made 37 Serie A appearances, contributed one goal and four assists and was voted Serie A Defender of the Year after helping the club retain its top-flight status. His performances also earned him his senior Italy debut earlier this year. The defender progressed through Atalanta’s renowned academy before making his first-team breakthrough in Bergamo. After gaining senior experience with Atalanta, his impressive season at Cagliari established him as one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Italian football. Chelsea believe they have secured a player capable of developing into a long-term fixture under Alonso. The Spaniard used wing-backs extensively during his successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen before showing greater tactical flexibility during his time at Real Madrid. Palestra’s pace, athleticism and comfort on both feet should allow him to adapt to either system. Chelsea have made youth a central part of their recruitment strategy in recent transfer windows, and Palestra fits that profile perfectly. With a full pre-season ahead, the club will hope the Italian settles quickly as Alonso begins shaping a squad capable of challenging for major honours both domestically and in Europe.
