One of the biggest obstacles in negotiations concerns the Brazilian international’s request for a renewal bonus for agreeing to a new contract. Real Madrid, however, have traditionally refused to pay players simply for extending existing agreements, and Perez is reluctant to break with that long-standing policy. Image rights could be key While the club appears unwilling to grant a renewal bonus, there may be greater flexibility regarding image rights. Historically, Real Madrid have retained 50% of players’ commercial image-rights revenue, although exceptions have been made for superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo.
