Liverpool on brink of deal for £75m star after 'positive' talks held

Liverpool on brink of deal for £75m star after 'positive' talks held Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola are going to be at the centre of another rebuild for Liverpool. Their £450 million spend last summer clearly wasn't enough as they finished fifth in the Premier League table. This lack of form has led to fans demanding that new players get brought in but, without moving some of their own on, it's unlikely that enough deals will be made at Anfield to make that much of a difference. Players such as Harvey Elliott, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones have all been linked with exits , however, this latest update isn't to do with any of them. Virgil van Dijk has held 'positive' talks with Galatasaray ahead of a potential summer switch Virgil van Dijk has been one of Liverpool's best players over the last few years. The Dutchman has helped hold down the Reds' defence and, no matter who he's been partnered with, he's always managed to get the best out of them. Admittedly, Ibrahima Konate's form did let the team down a bit during the 2025-26 season but, since Van Dijk was fairly solid, they still qualified for the Champions League. And, even though Liverpool already need to add another new centre-back to their ranks, a fresh report from Turkish outlet Fotomac has shared that the Dutchman has held 'positive' talks with Galatasaray about joining them this summer. "Galatasaray, preparing to sell Davinson Sanchez , may sign world-renowned central defender Virgil van Dijk ," they wrote. "It is reported that the 34-year-old star, who has one year left on his contract with Liverpool, could leave the English giant to join Galatasaray. "The club has held preliminary talks with the Dutch player's agent. Contact with the Dutch defender, who is currently participating in the World Cup, has been positive." Liverpool cannot let Virgil van Dijk go unless they get offered an obscene amount of money All the way back in 2017, Liverpool signed Van Dijk for £75 million . At the time, most people thought that the Reds overpaid for the centre-back and that he'd fail to live up to the expectations placed upon his shoulders. However, that couldn't have been further from the truth with the now 34-year-old seen as one of the Premier League's best-ever centre-backs. He's single-handedly carried Liverpool through their best and worst times and, without him among their ranks, they'd have been so much worse off. A lot of Jurgen Klopp 's success at Anfield can be put down to Van Dijk's performances and, since the Reds only have four centre-backs among their ranks at the moment, they cannot afford to lose him. Jeremy Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni and Gomez are all obviously exceptional players but, everyone knows that having three centre-backs for an entire season would mean that Liverpool were under-prepared. However, everyone has a price and if Galatasaray offer Liverpool enough to easily replace Van Dijk, then negotiations could certainly be had. But, if they don't offer a decent chunk of change, there's no way that the Reds should let their towering Dutchman go, especially if they're wanting to win the Premier League or the Champions League this season.
