Sky Sports: Manchester United considering two midfield options

Sky Sports: Manchester United considering two midfield options Manchester United Transfer Plans: Tchouameni, Alex Scott and Summerville Lead Summer Shortlist Manchester United’s summer is taking shape, and the message is straightforward. Midfield comes first. According to Sky Sports, “Aurelien Tchouameni and Alex Scott remain high on Manchester United’s list of midfield targets.” That tells you plenty about the level United want, and the type of age profile they are weighing up at the same time. Photo IMAGO There is context here. United are “assessing their next options after seeing Mateus Fernandes join Tottenham for £85m this week” and the wider shortlist “also includes Felix Nmecha, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Sander Berge.” In plain terms, they missed one option and are now working through a board of alternatives with very different price points, levels of experience and ceilings. Midfield shortlist shows mixed strategy Tchouameni is the glamour name, but also the awkward one. The report states that “the situation around Tchouameni at Real Madrid is complicated by the Spanish club’s intentions to reshape their own midfield.” That is a polite way of saying this is not in United’s hands. Madrid have their own internal puzzle to solve, and “if Real Madrid do need to create space in midfield, they are widely reported in Spain to be more open to moving on Eduardo Camavinga.” In other words, United can admire Tchouameni all they like, but admiration does not create availability. Photo IMAGO Alex Scott looks more realistic on paper, although even that comes with a warning label. “With Tchouameni currently difficult, Bournemouth’s Scott is also a high-priority target for United.” The snag is obvious, because “Bournemouth do not want to sell any of their best players, including Scott, whom they would like to sign a new deal.” If that is the selling club’s position, United either pay a premium or move on quickly. Bouaddi is the developmental play. United “have made further checks on Lille and Morocco midfielder Bouaddi this week” and the timing matters, because the 18-year-old “continues to impress at the World Cup.” Nmecha and Berge remain on the list, sensible names if United want function over noise. Ederson remains key to transfer window One line in the report should not be overlooked, “Strengthening in midfield has been and remains United’s priority this summer, with a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson to be completed after his World Cup stint with Brazil.” If that goes through, it changes the shape of the whole discussion. Ederson gives legs, security and presence. Then the next midfield addition can be chosen for profile rather than desperation. Photo IMAGO Summerville chase adds pressure There is also the left wing issue. “Crysencio Summerville remains the number one target on the left wing, despite the club prioritising midfield this summer.” United “have held initial, exploratory talks with West Ham” and want to fund a deal through the sale of Marcus Rashford. That sounds neat in theory. In practice, Tottenham are involved, time moves fast and the report makes clear United know “they could lose out to Spurs on another priority target if they don’t move quickly.” Lewis Hall at left-back is parked for now. Photo IMAGO Our View From a United fan’s perspective, this sounds familiar, and that is not meant as praise. The shortlist has quality on it, but it also has the look of a club trying to keep too many doors open at once. Tchouameni is excellent, of course he is, but if Madrid do not want to play ball then stop wasting oxygen on it. Scott is a good player, tidy, smart and improving, though Bournemouth will charge heavily because they can. Bouaddi is exciting, but if you are asking an 18-year-old to help fix a midfield immediately, you are already making life harder for yourself. The interesting bit is Ederson. If he really is on the way once Brazil are done, then fine, that is a proper start. He looks like someone built for the Premier League. After that, United need clarity. One more midfielder with authority, one winger with pace and output, then get out of the market. No soap opera, no endless briefings, no drawn-out sagas. Summerville makes sense, especially if Rashford is leaving, but there is a recurring issue here. Spurs moved decisively for Mateus Fernandes. United are now being linked with alternatives and warned they could be beaten again. That is the part supporters will dislike most. Recruitment should set the pace, not react to it. If Carrick wants a sharper, more athletic side, the club have to move like one. Source: Sky Sports
