‘We have the best midfield in the world’ says Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente

‘We have the best midfield in the world’ says Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente Manager Luis de la Fuente believes Spain ‘have the best midfield in the world’.  The 65-year-old head coach made these comments in an interview with The Guardian , claiming they have two best players per position.  He said: “I say this with the greatest of respect to everyone, we have the best midfield in the world. We have two players per position who are the best players. I can list them: Rodrigo, Zubimendi, Fabián, Pedri, Olmo, Merino, Fabian, Baena, Gavi, Fermín who isn’t here.”  Given Spain’s embarrassment of riches in midfield, De la Fuente’s big claim appears to be true.  La Roja have Rodri, who is widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.  Operating as the ultimate anchor, the Manchester City star provides unmatched defensive stability and tactical intelligence.  Pedri, who led Barcelona to the 2025-26 La Liga title, offers composure under pressure, elite passing and outstanding dribbling skills.  Add in Fabian Ruiz, Dani Olmo and Martin Zubimendi, and the Euro 2024 winners have the most fearsome midfielders.  Spain came into the World Cup 2026 as the favourites but didn’t exactly live up to the billing.  Cape Verde pulled off a big surprise by holding them to a frustrating goalless draw in their opening group game.  But with Lamine Yamal returning to the side, Spain bounced back strongly by thrashing Saudi Arabia and overcoming Uruguay to secure top spot in Group H.  La Roja strolled into the round of 16 with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Austria.  However, De la Fuente’s charges now face a challenging task as they encounter Portugal who enter the contest with renewed purpose and belief following a thrilling 2-1 success over Croatia.
