Real Madrid finally announce fourth summer signing as defender joins for €20m
Real Madrid finally announce fourth summer signing as defender joins for €20m For weeks, it has been known that Real Madrid would be signing Inter Milan and Netherlands defender Denzel Dumfries. Florentino Perez announced during his re-election campaign that a deal had been done for the 30-year-old, although it has taken until now for the club to make it official. On Sunday, Real Madrid released an official statement confirming that Dumfries has become the club’s fourth summer signing – after Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella and Ibrahima Konate. He has signed a four-year contract, which will take him through to the end of the 2029-30 season. “Real Madrid C. F. and Inter Milan have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Denzel Dumfries, who is linked to our club for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030.” Real Madrid activated Dumfries’ release clause After the decision was made for captain Dani Carvajal to leave at the end of last season, Real Madrid began work on securing the services of a replacement. They had their own targets, but when new head coach Jose Mourinho asked for Dumfries to be signed, they quickly moved to activate the €20m release clause in his contract. Despite a deal having been done for weeks, Real Madrid chose to wait until Dumfries and the Netherlands were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup, which happened earlier this week at the hands of Morocco, before making the transfer official. They did this out of respect for their new player, as it allowed him to fully focus on the tournament without any unwanted distractions. Dumfries will be presented as a new Real Madrid player in the coming weeks, once he jets into the Spanish capital after a well-earned break from football. He will be under Mourinho’s orders upon joining up with his new teammates later this summer, before building himself up again for the start of the 2026-27 season.
