Leeds United In The Race For €30m Centre-Back: Should Daniel Farke Push For Him?
Leeds United In The Race For €30m Centre-Back: Should Daniel Farke Push For Him? The summer transfer window loves a saga. This one has moved from Turin straight to the gossip columns of West Yorkshire, with Italian outlet Tutto Juve via Sport Witness reporting that Juventus want a quick sale for Lloyd Kelly. They want him off the books. Fast. Farke must look elsewhere as Juventus slash Kelly’s price tag Originally holding out for €35 million, the Italian giants have dropped their demands to a more realistic €30 million to help fund their own incoming business. Leeds United are in the mix. So are Aston Villa and Everton. It is a crowded race for a player who only moved to Italy permanently last year after a loan spell from Newcastle United. Kelly racked up 3,947 minutes across 44 matches last season, becoming a regular fixture in the Old Lady’s backline. Yet, homesickness bites. The 27-year-old wants back into English football, and a Premier League return looks the most likely destination. The tactical reality behind the numbers TURIN, ITALY – OCTOBER 05: Lloyd Kelly of Juventus FC competes with Yossouf Fofana of AC Milan during the Serie A match between Juventus FC and AC Milan at Allianz Stadium on October 5, 2025 in Turin, Italy. (Photo by Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images) On paper, the appeal makes sense for Daniel Farke. Kelly is a left-footed centre-back who can comfortably slot in at left-back, precisely the kind of versatility managers crave. His numbers in Serie A last year look decent enough. One goal, one assist, and a solid 7.12 average FotMob rating across 35 league games. He is a big lad, too. Standing at 190cm, he absolutely dominated 72% of his aerial duels last term, even racking up a massive 16 clearances in a single bruising encounter against Atalanta. Transfermarkt puts his market value at €23 million. But look closer. The financial reality simply does not stack up for Leeds. Paying €30 million for a defender who couldn’t even cement a regular starting spot during his time at Newcastle is bad business. Plain and simple. There is also the small matter of Aston Villa dangling the carrot of Champions League football under the nose of his agency, Collective Sports Management. Leeds cannot match that. Not right now. More importantly, Kelly has flaws that do not suit Farke’s system. He has an excellent recovery pace, sure. But his passive defensive stats are a worry. When teams pin him deep in his own penalty box, he struggles. Leeds do not need a luxury utility player right now. The recruitment team should focus their limited cash on an out-and-out full-back who can provide relentless attacking width over a brutal domestic campaign. Spending a fortune on a stopgap is an unnecessary gamble when the squad needs specialised, robust reinforcements to consolidate in the Premier League.
