10-man England beat Mexico to advance to World Cup quarter-finals

10-man England beat Mexico to advance to World Cup quarter-finals 10-man England held on to seal a memorable 3-2 victory against Mexico to book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.  Mexico hadn’t lost a competitive fixture at the Estadio Azteca since 2013 against Honduras, but England outclassed them in a five-goal thriller with Jude Bellingham scoring a brilliant brace.  The co-hosts were the better side early in the game, as they dominated possession and chances.    But England scored against the run of play in the 36th minute when Bukayo Saka’s sumptuous ball into the box was turned in by Jude Bellingham.   The Real Madrid midfielder quickly added another to stun the home crowd, firing in from close range.  But Bellingham’s double drew an immediate, superlative response from El Tri, as Julian Quinones halved the deficit by lashing into the roof of the net.  Mexico would have levelled the scores before the interval if not for Jordan Pickford’s brilliant save and Bellingham crucial tackle.  England suffered a massive blow early in the second-half when Jarell Qunsah saw a red card for his studs up challenge on Jesus Gallardo.  Despite being reduced to 10-man, the Three Lions’ chances for victory still looked more promising after Harry Kane scored a penalty on the hour mark.  But the Bayern Munich star also conceded a spot-kick, which was converted by Raul Jimenez to bring the co-hosts back in the game.  England had the last laugh though, as they produced an outstanding defensive display to seal a memorable victory, sealing their progress to the next round.  Thomas Tuchel’s charges will now face Norway, who overcame Brazil in the round of 16.
