Liverpool star could be set to stay after Fabrizio Romano’s latest update
Liverpool star could be set to stay after Fabrizio Romano’s latest update Tottenham Target Cody Gakpo as Liverpool Keep Exit Door Closed Tottenham are spending like a club that has seen the danger signs and decided not to wait for them to flash again. After a dismal 2025/26 campaign, Roberto De Zerbi has walked into North London and the brief is obvious, rebuild quickly, rebuild hard, and stop flirting with another mess. They have already done plenty. Andy Robertson has arrived from Liverpool on a free transfer, Jan Paul van Hecke is in, Mateus Fernandes is in, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have followed, and the headline move is a reported £100 million agreement for Sandro Tonali. This is not cosmetic change. It is an overhaul. Now attention is shifting towards the forward line, and Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel says Tottenham are looking closely at Cody Gakpo. The Liverpool forward is admired, but admiration and availability are two different things. Romano said: “Don’t forget what I told you recently, Savinho is a top target for Tottenham. And then they have another player that they really appreciate, which is Cody Gakpo from Liverpool. But in this case it will depend on what happens at Liverpool because, at the moment, doors for an exit are not open.” He added: “But Tottenham keep thinking of Savinho and keep thinking of Cody Gakpo after reshaping their midfield with Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali,” Romano added. Photo IMAGO Spurs Transfer Plans Gather Pace The situation is straightforward. Tottenham like Gakpo, they like Savinho too, and one target may prove more realistic than the other. Liverpool, for now, are not inviting bids. That matters more than the player being monitored, appreciated, or discussed behind the scenes. Liverpool Stance on Cody Gakpo Gakpo had a poor 2025/26 season in a struggling Liverpool side under Arne Slot, before the Dutchman was dismissed in May. That naturally created noise around his future. It does not automatically mean a sale is coming, especially with Andoni Iraola now in charge and reassessing the squad. For Tottenham, this feels like a live file rather than an imminent deal. Interest is real. Progress is not. Until Liverpool change their position, this remains one to watch rather than one close to completion. Spurs Can Admire All They Want From a satisfied Liverpool fan perspective, this reads like a lot of noise and not much danger. Tottenham can admire Cody Gakpo all they want, plenty of clubs admire good players. The key line here is the obvious one, Liverpool are not opening the door. That should end most of the hysteria. Gakpo had a rough season, but so did a lot of players in a chaotic side that badly underperformed. Form dips happen. Context matters. A bad year does not suddenly make him expendable, especially when he still has the attributes to be useful under a new head coach. Iraola deserves the chance to assess him properly in a more coherent structure before anyone starts talking about exits. There is also no need for Liverpool to help Tottenham fix their attack. Spurs are rebuilding aggressively and that is their business, but Liverpool should not be strengthening a domestic rival unless the fee is enormous and the replacement is already lined up. Even then, it would need to make football sense, not just accounting sense. The sensible reading is simple. Tottenham are keeping options open. Liverpool are keeping control. Right now, that suits Anfield just fine. Source: Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel
