Homecoming Complete: Olympic Champion Shelina Zadorsky Joins AFC Toronto AFC Toronto has announced the signing of Olympic gold medalist Shelina Zadorsky. Zadorsky, 33, is a FIFA Women’s World Cup veteran and one of the country’s most accomplished international players. The signing comes as the side prepares for the second half of the 2026 Northern Super League season. The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the Northern Super League revealed a landmark strategic investment from APEX Capital. The agreement, worth up to $30 million, underscores growing confidence in the league’s future. The arrival of one of Canada’s most decorated players serves as another statement of ambition. A boon both for AFC Toronto and for a league continuing to attract elite Canadian talent back home. Coming home to Canada at a great time For Zadorsky, the move is more than just the next chapter of her professional career. It’s a return to Canadian football at a pivotal moment. The opportunity abounds to help shape the country’s first professional women’s league after years spent representing Canada on the world’s biggest stages. The London, Ontario native arrives after successful spells across Australia, Sweden, the United States and England. Along the way, she featured for Perth Glory, Vittsjö GIK, Orlando Pride, Washington Spirit, Tottenham Hotspur. Her most recent club was West Ham United in the Women’s Super League. Shelina has enjoyed a distinguished career in some of the world’s top leagues, including the NWSL and the WSL, so it means a great deal that she has chosen to come home and join AFC Toronto.” Wilson believes the impact of the veteran defender will extend far beyond matchdays. “Beyond the impact she will make on the pitch, Shelina is a leader who is passionate about helping develop the next generation of players,” he added. “As the youngest team in the league, we have an incredibly talented group of young players who will benefit immensely from working alongside someone of Shelina’s calibre. Her professionalism, experience, and winning mentality will be invaluable as we continue building the culture and identity of this club.” Zadorsky brings leadership, experience Head Coach Marko Milanović echoed those sentiments, highlighting the composure and leadership Zadorsky will bring to the squad. “We are excited to welcome Shelina to the club,” said Milanović. “She brings composure, leadership and an exceptional understanding of the game. Her experience in high-pressure environments, combined with her ability to organize and communicate, will strengthen our already strong back line and have a positive influence throughout the squad.” For Zadorsky, the decision to return to Canada carries special significance. I cannot wait to represent Toronto, get to know the team and fans, and be a part of growing football in our country.” Her résumé speaks for itself. Zadorsky has earned more than 100 appearances for Canada, representing the national team at two FIFA Women’s World Cups and three Olympic Games. She helped Canada capture bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics before playing a key role in the historic gold medal-winning campaign at the Tokyo Olympics, cementing her place among the country’s most reliable defenders. Off the pitch, Zadorsky has consistently invested in life beyond football. She earned a psychology degree from the University of Michigan before completing an MBA. Meanwhile, she continued her professional career overseas, balancing elite competition with higher education. Passionate about mentorship, she also advocates for holistic athlete development through yoga and remains committed to supporting the next generation of Canadian players. Zadorsky officially joined AFC Toronto on July 1. She will be available for selection once the Northern Super League transfer window opens on July 20.
