Ruben Amorim admits he made mistakes during his time at Manchester United Ruben Amorim has acknowledged he made many mistakes during his time at Manchester United. Amorim was sacked as United manager in January after a challenging 14-month period at Old Trafford. The Portuguese has now returned to management, as he takes charge of Serie A giants AC Milan. Speaking in his first press-conference, Amorim reflected on his time in the Premier League, admitting he made mistakes during his difficult spell at United. “It’s hard to explain the mistakes because for that I would have to explain all the context of the last adventure,” Amorim said. “It’s hard to say to you every mistake. The only thing to say is I learned a lot and I did some mistakes.” Amorim arrived at United with a reputation as one of Europe’s elite coaches following his stunning success at Sporting Lisbon. But his tactics didn’t work in the Premier League, despite significant backing in the transfer window. Amorim’s first season saw the Red Devils finish 15th in the table and lose the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. The club’s hierarchy stuck with the Portuguese and made funds available for several key additions in attack. However, there was no visible improvement on the pitch, and despite heavy criticism from fans and former players, he persisted with a back-three system. The pointed comments he made against the hierarchy in January proved to be the last straw. Michael Carrick was appointed as interim manager, and he quickly unlocked the squad’s potential, leading United back into the Champions League. His remarkable achievement prompted the hierarchy to hand Carrick the permanent job at Old Trafford.
