Christian Eriksen’s club gives health update after second on-pitch collapse

Wolfsburg midfielder Christian Eriksen is preparing to begin an individual rehabilitation programme in his native Denmark, following a concerning second medical incident in June. The 34-year-old briefly lost consciousness during a friendly international between Denmark and Ukraine on June 8, an event that led to the match's abandonment and renewed fears for his health. This latest incident marked a deeply concerning recurrence for Eriksen, who famously suffered a cardiac arrest during the Covid-19 pandemic-postponed Euro 2020 tournament. In the aftermath of his recent collapse, the midfielder swiftly took to social media to reassure his supporters, clarifying that he wanted "to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021". Wolfsburg confirmed the rehabilitation plans in a statement, detailing the arrangements for their player. "Christian Eriksen will shortly begin an individual rehabilitation programme,” the statement began. Eriksen has collapsed on the pitch twice in the last five years (Reuters) “Following discussions with VfL Managing Director Dieter Hecking, it was decided that the 34-year-old will complete it in his native Denmark. VfL remains in regular contact with Christian and the doctors overseeing his treatment. We continue to wish Christian all the very best with his rehabilitation." In a poignant Instagram post following the June incident, Eriksen shared his personal experience and gratitude: "I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family. As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021. “In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years. Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it. For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children." Eriksen’s initial health scare saw him require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) during Denmark’s 1-0 defeat to Finland at Parken Stadium on June 12, 2021. A pacemaker was fitted days later. Due to stringent Serie A rules preventing players with pacemakers from competing, he subsequently left Inter Milan. He then resumed his professional career with Brentford in 2022, enjoyed a three-year spell at Manchester United, and joined Wolfsburg last summer on a two-year deal.
