Arsenal sign 27yo Spanish full-back from Barcelona Ona Batlle arrives with Champions League, World Cup and Nations League titles, but her role may reshape Arsenal’s defensive balance. I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.” Batlle’s honours list with Barcelona is outstanding. Over the past three years, she has won three Spanish league titles , three Spanish Cups, three Spanish Super Cups and two UEFA Champions League titles. With Spain , she started every game as they won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, and also won back-to-back UEFA Women’s Nations League titles in 2023/24 and 2024/25. In recognition of those achievements, Batlle was named in The Best FIFA Women’s 11 in 2024 and 2025, as well as the FIFPRO Women’s World 11 in 2025. Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley said: “Ona’s track record at both club and international level speaks for itself – she’s a proven winner with a hunger to add more trophies. We’re delighted to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal, and I know our supporters will make her feel welcome straight away.” Head Coach Renée Slegers said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring Ona to the club. She’s a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She’s a winner and we want to go for more wins together.” Photo by Maja Hitij/Getty Images The question now is where Batlle fits into the side. She is a world-class right back, but Arsenal already have another elite option in that position in Emily Fox , who may at some stage want to return to the NWSL . There is also Smilla Holmberg , the young Sweden international, who arguably offers even more in an attacking sense, as well as academy player Sophie Harwood , who has recently been offered her first professional contract. Four right backs would be a lot for any squad, particularly with only Taylor Hinds as a natural left back. That points towards one of the right-sided defenders moving across, most likely either Fox or Batlle, while Harwood could go out on loan to gain first-team experience. The ideal balance may be Batlle and Holmberg competing on the right, with Hinds and Fox competing on the left. There is also the possibility that Batlle has been signed as the replacement for Katie McCabe at left back. Batlle will wear the No 22 shirt. Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images
