Everton Linked With 33-Year-Old Championship Goalkeeper: Is He The Right Option For David Moyes?
Everton Linked With 33-Year-Old Championship Goalkeeper: Is He The Right Option For David Moyes? Mark Travers wants out. Or, at the very least, other clubs want him in . After making a total of two Carabao Cup appearances following his £4 million switch from Bournemouth, the Republic of Ireland international is understandably assessing his options. Coventry City are keen, ready to trigger a release clause in a contract that runs until 2029, though the paperwork hasn’t moved yet. Now Wrexham have stuck their noses in too. Everton eye goalkeeping reinforcement as surprise veteran name emerges Everton, sensible as ever under the current regime, are waiting for the Travers domino to fall before making a concrete move. But David Moyes needs a backup goalkeeper, and Give Me Sport reveals Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Sam Johnstone is on the shortlist. A curious fit for the Toffees’ bench WOLVERHAMPTON, ENGLAND – JANUARY 10: Sam Johnstone of Wolverhampton Wanderers during the Emirates FA Cup Third Round match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Shrewsbury Town on January 10, 2026 in Wolverhampton, England. (Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images) Let’s be very practical! Johnstone’s last campaign at Molineux was dreadful. Relegation with Wolves hurts any player’s stock, but conceding 24 goals in 12 Premier League starts while failing to keep a single clean sheet is particularly grim reading. He managed just 37 saves. A match rating of 6.46 tells its own story. Why buy him? Experience, mostly. The Preston-born keeper has four England caps and knows the harsh realities of top-flight football. He is big, standing at 191cm, dominates his box when confident, and can pass a ball well enough. But £10 million was spent on him by Wolves in 2024, and his form cratered. Conceding two or more goals in five straight games isn’t the mark of a reliable safety net. At 33, Johnstone represents a short-term patch rather than a project with any real growth. Everton’s recruitment team have done smart business lately, securing Hayden Hackney and locking down Tyrique George permanently. They aren’t panicking. If Travers stays put, the entire issue evaporates. If he packs his bags for the EFL, Moyes has to decide if Johnstone’s Premier League survival scars are an asset or a warning sign.
