Man Utd fans will get behind Lammens
[Getty Images] 30 August 2026. First home game of the season. At about 15:40 BST, Senne Lammens and the rest of the Manchester United goalkeeping group will come out to warm up. Lammens will be given a huge ovation. The support will be there through the warm-up, as the players leave the field, when they come out again, when Lammens takes his place for kick-off - and it will continue. One of the reasons many United fans of a certain age are ambivalent towards the national team is the treatment their players tended to receive as a result of international duty. The nadir was David Beckham's red card against Argentina in 1998 – an effigy of the midfielder hanging from a noose was dangled from a pub in South Norwood at the height of the criticism. Wayne Rooney was condemned for his red card in the 2006 tournament. Twelve years after that, David de Gea was lambasted by the Spanish press for his performances at the World Cup. There is sympathy for Lammens for what happened on Friday night given he had come into Belgium's World Cup quarter-final cold following Thibaut Courtois' injury. However, at 24, he must carry with him the mistake that cost Belgium their place in the tournament. On 30 August, United's fans will provide tangible proof that no matter what happened in the USA they have not forgotten how good he was last season, that they are solidly behind him and believe in him.
