Andoni Iraola confirms Liverpool need more signings in first Reds press conference
Andoni Iraola confirms Liverpool need more signings in first Reds press conference Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has admitted that the club need to sign more players this summer. Iraola was appointed last month , replacing Arne Slot. He signed a two-year contract with the Reds. Liverpool endured a disappointing campaign last season. They suffered 20 defeats across all competitions for the first time since 1992/93. The club’s struggles have heightened expectations ahead of this summer’s transfer window, but Liverpool have so far completed only two signings. Speaking at his first conference, Iraola said that the club recognises the need to strengthen their squad. “Obviously, we’ve signed two players already, but we need more players – we know this,” Iraola told liverpoolfc.com “The club is working on this. As a coach, selfishly, you want the players here [on] day one, ready to train from the pre-season, but we understand that football doesn’t work like this. I know the club is working hard to get those signings, and I’m trying obviously to help also.” Liverpool spent heavily last summer, breaking the British record transfer fee twice with the signings of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. However, their heavy spending failed to deliver the desired results, raising questions about the club’s recruitment team, led by sporting director Richard Hughes Liverpool’s plans in the current transfer window have become more complicated following Mohamed Salah’s departure. The Merseyside giants are prioritising the signing of Salah’s replacement, while also looking to add more firepower to Iraola’s squad. RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande was their priority target, but the Ivorian has chosen to join Paris Saint-Germain instead . The Reds are now considering several alternatives, with PSG’s Bradley Barcola and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Yankuba Minteh among players under consideration. Liverpool could also strengthen in central midfield, although that will likely depend on player departures. The club are also considering defensive reinforcements.
