Which clubs have the most players at the 2026 World Cup?
[BBC] Manchester City will have 19 players who last played a club match for them featuring at this summer's 2026 World Cup across North America. Of the 19 City players that feature in World Cup squads, four are in England's camp. Goalkeeper James Trafford is in Thomas Tuchel's 26-man list, as are defenders Marc Guehi, Nico O'Reilly and John Stones. Like Stones, City captain Bernardo Silva is leaving the club this summer. Silva is one of three current City players in Portugal's World Cup line-up alongside defender Ruben Dias and midfielder Matheus Nunes. The Netherlands and Croatia both have two City players in each of their squads. Tijjani Reijnders and Nathan Ake are in the Dutch side, while Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol are in Croatia's team. Erling Haaland (Norway), Omar Marmoush (Egypt), Rayan Cherki (France), Jeremy Doku (Belgium), Rodri (Spain), Rayan Ait-Nouri (Algeria), Antoine Semenyo (Ghana) and Abdukodir Khusanov (Uzbekistan) complete the list. Not only is that the highest number from any club in English football, but it is also makes them the most represented club across world football. Players who ended last season out on loan at a different club are not included in these totals. There are 18 teams who will have 10 or more players at the tournament that last played club football for them, of which six are English clubs. German champions Bayern Munich are in joint-second place with 16 players, alongside back-to-back Champions League winners Paris St-Germain. La Liga title-winners Barcelona are fourth with 15 players, while Arsenal make up the top five with 14. Barca were the most represented club at the last World Cup with 17 on show in Qatar as Man City were joint-second alongside Bayern on 16. Four years previously in Russia, City led the way with 16, Real Madrid second on 15 and Barca in third with 14. Barca's 17 from four years ago was a new record for a single World Cup meaning City have set a new mark this year, aided by the expansion from 32 to 48 teams. Sunderland are among the English clubs with 10 or more World Cup players who last played a club game for them. Initially, they had just missed out with a total of nine, prior to defender Lutsharel Geertruida earning a late call-up to the Netherlands squad on Monday. The Black Cats also have two additional players who spent last season on loan at other clubs attending the tournament. This article is the latest from BBC Sport's Ask Me Anything team.
