Barcelona admire World Cup-winning Premier League defender, but prefer a different profile Signing a centre-back is not among FC Barcelona’s priorities this summer, although the sporting department continues to monitor the market in case circumstances change before the transfer window closes. Much could depend on Ronald Araujo’s future, with the Catalans keeping their options open should the Uruguayan eventually depart. As already reported , one defender who remains highly regarded internally is Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero. The 28-year-old Argentine has enhanced his reputation with another impressive World Cup and is widely admired by Barcelona’s sporting department. He is keen on leaving Tottenham this summer and prefers a move to the Spotify Camp Nou . One factor works against Romero Despite Romero’s credentials, according to Mundo Deportivo , there is one significant reason why Barcelona are unlikely to make him their first choice if they enter the market for a central defender. Following Inigo Martinez’s departure last summer, Barça have become short of left-sided options in central defence. Gerard Martin has adapted impressively to the role alongside Pau Cubarsí since the second half of last season, while Eric García can also operate there when required, but neither is a natural long-term replacement. Romero, meanwhile, is right-footed, reducing his appeal despite his unquestionable defensive qualities. For that reason, Barcelona previously prioritised Alessandro Bastoni before eventually cooling their interest due to Inter Milan’s financial demands. Barcelona want a left-footed defender. But the move fell through. Long-standing interest in Romero This is not the first time Romero has featured on Barcelona’s radar. Back in 2021, shortly after Atalanta made his transfer permanent, Lionel Messi recommended the Argentine defender to the club during the uncertainty surrounding his own future at Camp Nou. Nothing came of it, however. Barcelona’s financial problems prevented Messi from remaining at the club, while Romero instead joined Tottenham on loan in August 2021 before completing a permanent €50 million transfer the following year. Although Barcelona continue to rate him highly, the club’s search for defensive reinforcements remains focused on finding a left-footed profile should the need to strengthen the position eventually arise.
