Rangers Eye Summer Swoop For This Leicester City Attacker: Why They Hold Advantage In A Potential Deal If a recent transfer update from journalist Mark Hendry is accurate, Rangers are keeping close tabs on Stephy Mavididi ahead of a potential summer move. They have held positive talks with Leicester City for the wide attacking ace and are ready to splash a fee in the region of £7m to secure his services. The 28-year-old former England youth international progressed through Southend United and Arsenal’s academy ranks before the Gunners loaned him to Charlton Athletic and Preston North End in the lower divisions of the English football pyramid. Juventus snapped him up for €1.5m in August 2018 for their reserves, and eventually sanctioned a temporary switch to Ligue 1 outfit Dijon for senior minutes. His impressive stint in France earned him a €6.3m transfer to the fellow top-flight side Montpellier. Leicester tied him down for €7.5m three years later, and the Englishman netted 12 league goals en route to clinching a Premier League return. They suffered back-to-back relegations over the past couple of campaigns, but relied on Mavididi, primarily down the left. Why Rangers Should Be Able To Meet Leicester’s Demands For The Attacker Meanwhile, the winger is unlikely to feature in League One next season, which boosts the Light Blues’ chances of bringing him to Ibrox. The Foxes are keen on John Souttar, and a potential deal involving the Scotsman could be pursued to streamline the transfer. (Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images) Rangers are undergoing a squad rebuild under Derek McInnes. They have wrapped up six new signings, but played it smart, with Lawrence Shankland, Dan Neil and Cammy Devlin joining on Bosman. Ben Godfrey has completed a season-long loan from Atalanta, whereas Ross McCrorie cost a minuscule £900,000, which could rise to between £1.5m and £2m if the add-ons and performance-related clauses are triggered. They paid £6m to Hull City for Ivor Pandur, but recouped £3m following Jack Butland’s move to the East Riding of Yorkshire in a player-plus-cash swap. The fund is there for further arrivals, and the focus must now shift to the attacking third, as they are expected to strengthen the frontline to overcome last season’s mediocrity on the flanks. What Mavididi Would Offer At Ibrox Mavididi prefers to operate from the left as an inverted winger, but could also slot in as a ‘False 9’ or second striker. His explosive pace, excellent 1v1 dribbling, and ability to stretch defences would be a much-needed addition, and the gaffer must deploy him as a wide attacker to maximise his impact. His occasional inconsistency in final-third decision-making remains a concern, but the Leicester City star is arguably an upgrade over Nedim Bajrami, Danilo, Oliver Antman and Andreas Skov Olsen.
