Trump White House official reveals USA will host 2031 Women’s World Cup
Fifa has told Donald Trump the US will host the 2031 Women’s World Cup, according to a top official in the White House administration. The executive director of the White House’s World Cup Task Force, Andrew Giuliani, revealed in an interview that Fifa had already informed Trump the US would host the tournament in five years’ time. That is despite Fifa not yet formally awarding any nation the hosting rights, with a joint bid from the US, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica the only entrant in the race. The decision on where the 2031 and 2035 Women’s World Cups will take place is expected to be made at an extraordinary congress before the end of this year, where Fifa’s member associations will vote. Giuliani said: “I know they’ve already told the president that the U.S. is going to get the World Cup in 2031, and that really should be fantastic.” He provided a caveat by repeating a key mantra of the Trump administration, that transgender women will not be welcome, signalling US agreement to host the tournament will be dependent on Fifa agreeing with its position on the issue. Giuliani said: “It is important that the Women’s World Cup does not violate the policy of the United States of America in that it is important that women play in the Women’s World Cup and not biological men. “That’s one of the things from our standpoint that will be really key in making sure that that is something that is good before any government guarantee discussions get going. “If that policy is in place, then I’m sure that discussions will progress pretty fast on this one.” The Trump administration has made blocking transgender athletes from participating in women’s sport a major domestic policy, but Fifa does not currently have the same stringent approach. It does not conduct its own sex testing at competitions under its jurisdiction, but requires national federations to check the eligibility of their own players.
