In Iraola's system, the centre-backs have to do far more than just defend. They're expected to be comfortable on the ball, play through the press and move possession forward quickly. In many ways, they're the starting point for almost every attack, so being able to pick a pass is just as important as winning a tackle. That was obvious during his time at Bournemouth. Players like Marcos Senesi and Dean Huijsen weren't just there to keep clean sheets. They were among the Premier League's best progressive passers in their respective seasons and played a huge role in helping Bournemouth build attacks from the back. Iraola gives his centre-backs the freedom to step into midfield with the ball and dictate play from deeper positions. It's a role that Liverpool fans will recognise because it's something Trent Alexander-Arnold often did, taking responsibility in possession and helping control the tempo before the attack really got going. With Ibrahima Konate now gone, signing at least one centre-back already looked like a priority. There was no mention of Liverpool in his announcement but his confirmation of his departure must now mean the Reds are on the verge of completing this transfer.
