Only one factor preventing Spanish captain’s move to Real Madrid – Romano Spain bossed the recently concluded FIFA World Cup and were thoroughly deserving of the title, but what made them such a potent threat was their ability to retain possession and suffocate opponents. Rodri, on that front, was instrumental for Spain and went on to win the Golden Ball in recognition of his stellar game-dictating abilities. Real Madrid have chased the Manchester City star for a long time, but rumours died down after the player was distantly linked with Enrique Riquelme’s electoral campaign. In recent days, however, the story has caught momentum once again. The only hurdle, however, is Florentino Perez. The Real Madrid president is not convinced by Rodri and his decision right now is not to sign the player. He likely sees the player’s age, fitness and transfer fee to be big risks in this case. The only hurdle stopping Rodri’s move to Real Madrid, thus, is the president’s stance. Internal pressure growing While there have been reports that Real Madrid are happy with their current midfield composition, there is an internal understanding that the team struggled terribly in that department last season. At this point, nothing can thus be said about Real Madrid’s next move, especially given that it depends on the exit operations. If the club are to sign Rodri, however, they must move fast, as his contractual situation and his recent World Cup display will make him a target for several other top European clubs.
