AC Milan target Karetsas to replace Leao after Genk reject Borussia Dortmund’s €30m bid

AC Milan target Karetsas to replace Leao after Genk reject Borussia Dortmund’s €30m bid AC Milan have identified Genk wonderkid Konstantinos Karetsas as a potential replacement for Rafael Leao, according to Gazzetta dello Sport . Interestingly, the Belgian club already rejected a €30 million (£26m) bid from Borussia Dortmund for the teenage sensation. The Rossoneri are stepping up their search for attacking reinforcements as uncertainty continues to surround Leao’s future. The Portugal international is still expected to leave if a suitable offer arrives before the transfer window closes. Per reports in Italy, Milan have now narrowed their shortlist and are focusing on 18-year-old Karetsas, who has been on the club’s radar for several months. The attacking midfielder, who can also operate from the right wing, first caught Milan’s attention during Genk’s Europa League clash with Braga last November. Senior figures at the San Siro were left impressed after the Greece international produced two assists in a thrilling 4-3 victory. He registered three goals and 18 assists across all competitions last season, including 11 in the league. However, securing his signature will not be straightforward. Genk have already turned down a €30m offer from Borussia Dortmund and are believed to value Karetsas at closer to €40m (£35m). The Belgian side tied the youngster to a new contract until June 2029, leaving them under little pressure to sell. Genk’s head of football, Dimitri De Conde, recently acknowledged the growing interest from Europe’s elite but insisted the club remain relaxed over the player’s future. Milan’s pursuit is also likely to depend on player sales. Leao remains the obvious candidate to generate the funds needed for a major move. The winger wants a new challenge earlier this summer, although no club has yet matched Milan’s valuation. Galatasaray have shown the strongest interest so far and have reportedly discussed personal terms with Leao. However, the Turkish champions have yet to submit an acceptable offer to Milan, while the player himself is not currently keen on the move. It remains to be seen if Milan will really rely on an 18-year-old to revitalise their attack when other serious options like Marcus Rashford and Crysencio Summerville are available.
