Confirmed: Barcelona miss out on 17-year-old forward target who completes shock move to FC Porto Barcelona’s search for the next generation of top talent has suffered a setback after Cardoso Varela officially completed his return to FC Porto, ending any hopes of a future move to the Catalan club. The latest Barcelona transfer news comes after months of speculation linking the highly-rated Portuguese winger with a switch to Spotify Camp Nou.  The 17-year-old had emerged as one of the names closely followed by the Blaugrana as part of the club’s long-term recruitment strategy, but the deal never progressed beyond the monitoring stage. Instead, the teenage prospect has opted to rejoin Porto from Dinamo Zagreb , bringing an end to one of the more unusual transfer stories involving one of Portugal’s brightest young players. At one stage, reports even suggested that Cardoso Varela to Barcelona was a realistic possibility , with the player viewed as someone who could eventually develop into a first-team option. However, the Barcelona transfer target never became a concrete signing. Complications surrounding the player’s contractual situation, along with disputes linked to his departure from Portuguese football, made negotiations increasingly difficult.  As a result, Barcelona stepped back from the operation, allowing Porto to bring their academy graduate back to the club. The move has now been made official, closing the door on any immediate Barcelona transfer for the Portuguese youngster. Transfer details and agency change played a key role According to reports, Porto did not pay a transfer fee to complete the deal. Instead, Dinamo Zagreb have retained 50 per cent of the player’s economic rights, meaning the Croatian club could still benefit from any future sale. Another significant development ahead of the move was Varela’s decision to change representation. The 17-year-old ended his relationship with agent Andy Bara, who also represents Barcelona players Dani Olmo and Joan Garcia, before joining the agency led by Pini Zahavi.  Zahavi already has strong links with Barcelona through clients including Hansi Flick and Robert Lewandowski. While the agency switch attracted attention within the Barcelona transfer circle, it ultimately had no impact on the winger’s final destination.
