While much of the focus is on Rodri and Lamine Yamal, both of whom have emerged as Ballon d’Or candidates , it is important to focus on Pau Cubarsi as well. As Mundo Deportivo notes, every previous World Cup-winning centre-back was comfortably into their twenties or even thirties, from Bobby Moore and Franz Beckenbauer to Daniel Passarella, Carles Puyol and Fabio Cannavaro. Cubarsi has broken entirely new ground, doing so as part of the meanest defence in World Cup history, with Spain the first champions ever to concede just a single goal across the entire tournament.
