Sunderland Are Facing Stiff Competition For This Ligue 1 Forward: Is He Worth The Fight? In a recent report , journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Sunderland are facing stiff competition for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun. It has been mentioned that the Black Cats would have to rival Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Everton, Leeds United and Fulham in the race to land the United States striker this summer. Balogun’s Impressive Numbers In Ligue 1 Balogun enjoyed a good run of form at the French club in the previous campaign when he put in a string of productive displays for them in the final third. The 25-year-old banged in 19 goals and grabbed five assists in 43 matches for Monaco last season across all fronts. The United States talent is currently among the most talented forwards in Ligue 1. Thus, it is no wonder that the Black Cats are hoping to win the race for his services this off-season. His current contract at the French club will run out in the summer of 2028, which could make it tough for Sunderland to land him on a cut-price deal in this transfer period. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JULY 06: Folarin Balogun #20 of the United States shows dejection after the team’s 1-4 defeat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between USA and Belgium at Seattle Stadium on July 06, 2026 in Seattle, Washington. Balogun is proficient at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has got the vision to create some inviting chances for his teammates in and around the opponent’s penalty area and is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet. The United States international can even chip in by scoring his fair share of goals up top. Balogun has got very little experience in the Premier League from his time at Arsenal. Hence, he would need some time to adjust to life in England if the Black Cats manage to snap him up later this year. We can expect Balogun to bring more firepower to Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris’ frontline. He has what it takes to compete for a regular starting spot at the Wearside club in the coming seasons. At 25, Balogun has his best years ahead of him, which makes him a decent fit for Sunderland’s needs this summer. He would be well worth the fight, so Le Bris would be wise to step up his efforts to land him soon.
