Barcelona admire World Cup-winning defender but transfer remains unlikely Barcelona’s search for defensive reinforcements has led the club to monitor several experienced centre-backs, and one name on the radar is Athletic Club defender Aymeric Laporte.  The Spain international enhanced his reputation with an impressive 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, but despite the admiration from Camp Nou , a deal remains far from straightforward. According to Mundo Deportivo , Barcelona appreciate Laporte’s profile and are aware that he possesses the experience and quality to strengthen Hansi Flick’s squad.  However, the Catalan club have not made any formal move, leaving the situation at the stage of interest rather than negotiations. For now, Barcelona sporting director Deco has not contacted Athletic’s dire c tor of football, Mikel Gonzalez , nor has the club opened discussions with the player’s representatives.  In fact, sources within Barcelona have also indicated that no direct approach has been made despite growing speculation surrounding the defender’s future. Reports earlier this month suggested Laporte had been offered to Barcelona , but those claims have not developed into concrete negotiations.  From Barcelona’s perspective, even though the admiration is genuine, there has been no indication that the club is preparing an official bid. This is because relations between the two clubs have become increasingly complicated following the Nico Williams transfer over the past two summers, making any negotiation more delicate than usual.  Athletic have traditionally protected their key players by pointing interested clubs towards their release clauses rather than entering lengthy negotiations.  While speculation has linked Laporte with a valuation of around €15 million, those close to the situation believe such a figure does not reflect the club’s position. Given Laporte’s pedigree, the Basque outfit is unlikely to consider offers below what they regard as his true market value.
