Phil Foden signs contract extension at Man City after World Cup snub

Phil Foden has signed a new four-year contract with Manchester City and said he can’t wait to work with new manager Enzo Maresca again. The England international, whose deal includes an option to keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031, said he wants to carry on making history with City. Foden is the joint most decorated City player ever, along with John Stones and Bernardo Silva , who both left this summer, and has set his sights on adding to his 20 trophies after being reunited with Maresca , Pep Guardiola ’s former assistant and successor. “I can’t wait to work with Enzo again,” said Foden. “He was brilliant during the Treble season [2022-23] – someone all the players respected and loved working with. To have him back here is exciting. Phil Foden has penned a four-year contract extension at Manchester City (Getty) “Personally, I know I’ve improved so much from working with our coaches and world-class squad and as many of the legends who were here when I first broke through move on, I am excited for the next phase of my career at this great club.” Foden has scored 110 goals in 369 games for City and his new deal could mean he becomes just the sixth player to make 500 appearances for the club. He has won six Premier League titles, five League Cups and the Champions League, among other things, and has been on City’s books since he was nine. “Committing my future to City means everything to me,” he added. “Playing for this club is all I’ve ever wanted to do and it’s always an honour to wear the shirt.  It’s not lost on me that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a historic period with so many titles won, but we’re always looking to the future and trying to win more.  Foden was named Footballer of the Year and PFA Player of the Year for 2023-24, when he scored 27 goals. However, he has since endured a difficult two seasons and finished last season on a run of 29 games without a goal as he missed out on a place in England’s World Cup squad .
