The soon-to-be 41-year-old has agreed terms to play the 2026/27 season at San Siro and is set to join the team on their pre-season tour in Australia after his post-World Cup break. Modrić is set to call time on his international career, with Croatia’s Nations League game against Spain in early October, a home affair to be played in Split, set to be his farewell match. Modrić is reportedly keen to end his Milan chapter on a better note than the one the Rossoneri ended the last season with. A need for continuity To say Milan entered this summer in upheaval would be an understatement. Crashing out of the Champions League spots on the last day of the season was just the tipping point; what followed was a mass exodus across their hierarchy. Many of those spots are filled, but in the dressing room Milan have been crying for a senior figure to embody a sense of calm, accountability, experience, and pedigree. There are few players currently better equipped to play that role than Modrić. Yes, he can hardly be expected to play week in, week out, and after a summer tournament he’d better get some rest and gradually get more minutes as the season progress, but his presence would help new coach Ruben Amorim in getting things going off the ground. He could be his man on the pitch and in the dug-out, help him properly get his feet under the table.
