Plymouth sign Mitchell from Charlton permanently

Alex Mitchell was named Supporters' Player of the Season following a successful loan from Charlton [Getty Images] Plymouth Argyle have brought back central defender Alex Mitchell on a three-year-deal from Championship side Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old was a mainstay of the Argyle defence during his season-long loan in 2025-2026, making 40 League One appearances as they finished eighth, two points adrift of the play-offs. He was also named Supporters' Player of the Season after shoring up a defence that conceded 88 goals in their relegation from the Championship the previous season. Head coach Tom Cleverley told the club website : "I'm so happy we've got Mitch back with us. He was superb for us last season, and everyone knows what a huge presence he is, both in the defence, and off the field. "You need characters like him in a group if you are to be successful. What is also so nice is his desire to return. He clearly enjoyed playing in green and white, and for him to want to come back is very pleasing to us." Mitchell told BBC Radio Devon the influence of Cleverley - the former Manchester United and England midfielder - had been huge. "If you look at the player I was when I first came here compared to where I am now, I think there's a lot of improvement and it's something I'll forever be grateful for him for," Mitchell said. "His man management, the way he's dealt with stuff I've had going on and stuff that other lads have had going on, there hasn't been a better way to handle it. "He's a brilliant manager and I can't really speak highly enough about him."
