Pirlo is now the overwhelming favourite to succeed Gennaro Gattuso, with an official announcement expected before the end of the weekend. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had explored ambitious alternatives before the former Juventus midfielder. Technical director Paolo Maldini and special advisor Leonardo confirmed they first approached Ancelotti before sounding out Guardiola. However, both elite managers declined the opportunity. Guardiola’s decision was reportedly influenced by more than just finances. The former Manchester City boss wanted a salary of around €20 million per year, well beyond the FIGC’s budget. More importantly, he also wants an extended break from management after a decade in charge at the Etihad Stadium, prioritising time with his family before considering another role. With those options off the table, attention quickly shifted to Pirlo. The 47-year-old only joined UAE Pro League side United FC in July 2025, but reports suggest an agreement to terminate his contract will not be an issue. Pirlo is poised to sign a deal that runs until the end of the 2030 World Cup. He will earn around €1.5m annually, a fraction of the wages required to appoint Guardiola, Ancelotti, Antonio Conte or Roberto Mancini. A member of Italy’s iconic 2006 World Cup-winning squad, Pirlo’s managerial career has been mixed. He lifted the Coppa Italia during his lone season at Juventus before spells with Fatih Karagumrük in Turkey and Sampdoria in Serie B. Despite that inconsistent record, Maldini and Leonardo view Pirlo as the ideal long-term appointment. His close relationship with both former AC Milan teammates, along with his admiration for mentor Ancelotti, has bolstered his candidacy. Italy are eager to rebuild the team around youth development, technical excellence and a clear footballing identity ahead of the 2028 European Championship and 2030 World Cup.
