Van de Ven opens up on De Zerbi’s system, insists Tottenham fans will witness ‘more enjoyable’ football Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven believes supporters will see a far more exciting brand of football under new manager Roberto De Zerbi in the coming season. The defender, who had been heavily linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer , praised the Italian’s attacking style and the fresh energy he has brought to the squad. In a recent interview, Van de Ven said that the team is already adapting to a system that focuses on keeping possession and playing on the front foot. His comments also aimed a sly dig at former manager Thomas Frank, who was sacked in February following a series of disappointing performances. “It’s going to be different compared to the former manager we had last season,” Van de Ven said (via talkSPORT ). “It’s going to be more with the ball, more playing football, it’s going to be more enjoyable also for people to watch, when playing offensive football. “The last couple of weeks of last season, you saw he (De Zerbi) brought a lot of passion into our group, a lot mentality-wise, passion-wise, on the pitch. “It is something we needed because everybody was a little bit down. “We started to play a lot with the ball, because he loves us to be on the ball, he loves to play the football he wants to play, and that’s also something I really enjoy. “He brings a lot of good energy, and from preseason, we have really got the time now to bring his football into the team. That’s really enjoyable.” Van de Ven’s comments also prove that his relationship with Frank had deteriorated before the former Brentford gaffer left the club. The Dutchman and teammate Djed Spence were seen walking past Frank without acknowledging him after a home defeat to Chelsea. Frank later revealed that both players apologised for their actions, but it wasn’t enough to boost the dressing room morale as Spurs went on to win just six of their next 22 games in all competitions. De Zerbi ultimately came in and managed to steer Tottenham away from relegation.
