A familiar name may return to Manchester City as their backup goalkeeper With James Trafford looking to be on the verge of completing a move from Manchester City to Leeds United, Enzo Maresca’s squad will be in need of a quality backup goalkeeper. Gianluigi Donnarumma will remain City’s first-choice keeper and ideally City would add an experienced keeper to be their reserve shot-stopper. It has now been reported that Olympique de Marseille keeper Gerónimo Rulli is the keeper that City have their eyes on for that particular role. Rulli is an experienced keeper who was once on Manchester City’s books. A return of sorts to the Etihad may be on the cards for Rulli. Manchester City have reportedly set their sights on signing Gerónimo Rulli as their backup keeper. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester City have their sights set on signing Olympique de Marseille’s Argentine goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli as their backup goalkeeper. Furthermore, Romano reports that Rulli is open to the opportunity of joining Enzo Maresca’s squad. Lastly, it is reported that Olympique de Marseille are aware of Manchester City’s interest in signing Rulli. It would seem that signing Gerónimo Rulli would be a straightforward move for City to complete. Gerónimo Rulli ticks the box of being an experienced goalkeeper to back up Gianluigi Donnarumma. He is 34 years of age and has played across Europe throughout his career. Rulli has had spells at Real Sociedad, Montpellier, Villarreal, Ajax and he is currently at Olympique de Marseille. Rulli was briefly on Manchester City’s books in 2016 before sent on loan to Real Sociedad at the beginning of 2017. He was sold to the Spanish club without ever making an appearance for Manchester City. Gerónimo Rulli is an experienced keeper who would add vast experience to Enzo Maresca’s squad. If he were to sign for Manchester City, he could have a similar impact to that of Stefan Ortega. Rulli would be City’s cup goalkeeper assuming that Enzo Maresca follows Pep Guardiola’s model of rotating keepers. If Donnarumma were to go down injured, Rulli would be a more than capable deputy. He is proficient with his feet to contribute in City’s build-up play from the back. Also, he is a proven goalkeeper who can make the required saves and command his penalty area. Manchester City look to have identified the goalkeeper they want to be Gianluigi Donnarumma’s backup. Gerónimo Rulli looks to be their target. Signing Rulli from Olympique de Marseille should be a straightforward process, so it could be a move that comes together quickly.
