New striker top priority for Plymouth - Cleverley

Tom Cleverley is beginning his second season in charge at Plymouth Argyle [Shutterstock] Plymouth Argyle manager Tom Cleverley says signing a new striker is the club's top priority. The Pilgrims sold top scorer Lorent Tolaj to Championship side Bristol City earlier this month for a fee in excess of £4m, less than a year after his £1.2m purchase from Port Vale. Argyle have brought in six players so far this summer, all of whom are either goalkeepers or defensive-minded. "The obvious one, and the one that can make or break teams, is replacing the nine," Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon. "So that's a top priority for all of us at the minute. "We can have a succession plan, we can have targets A, B, C, D and those are all in place, but ultimately you've got to meet the price of a selling club as well, which hasn't been done yet, and those conversations are ongoing." The club does have options up front in the form of Bim Pepple and Owen Oseni - and Cleverley says Plymouth will not overpay for a new forward and are prepared to be patient. "I think every day you get closer to that transfer deadline... clubs have a valuation for two months of a window and a different valuation in the last week," he said. "That's why it always seems to happen then. Obviously, we want to bring one in today, tomorrow, but we also won't significantly overpay.
