Southampton sign defender Murphy
Southampton sign defender Murphy Southampton have completed the signing of defender Niamh Murphy on a free transfer. The Saints announced the news via a post on their official club website earlier today. The 23-year-old defender joins Southampton following a spell in rehabilitation recovering from a long-term injury. Murphy sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury whilst at former club Blackburn Rovers and she has spent a significant spell on the sidelines. Murphy came through the youth ranks at Barclays Women’s Super League club Manchester United before going on to build her senior playing experience at Blackburn Rovers. The defender spent three years with the Lancashire side before leaving the club following their decision to exit the elite game last summer. Murphy is raring to go again and she will now resume her career in the second tier with Southampton. After joining Southampton, Murphy said “It’s really exciting, I’ve really enjoyed my first week and I can’t wait to get going. “I’ve worked with Simon [Parker] before and I like the way he manages his teams so I’m looking forward to being part of that again. I’m excited for the league to start and to get going again now.” Murphy is Southampton’s third signing of the summer transfer window.
